Karl Toews received his law degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2011. While attending law school, Karl developed a passion for criminal law through working at his law school’s community legal aid clinic, Downtown Legal Services. Karl’s criminal law professors at the University of Toronto included Justice Michael Code, Hamish Stewart, Kent Roach, and John Norris.
While in law school, Karl gained further criminal law experience by spending his summers working at the law office of Alan Gold and the federal prosecutor’s office in Brampton. Karl also volunteered at the Association in Defence of the Wrongfully Convicted where he worked closely with several prominent Toronto criminal defence lawyers.

After graduating law school, Karl articled at the federal Department of Justice in Toronto. During his articles, Karl worked on criminal law, civil law, extradition law and immigration law litigation cases. Some of those cases were before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Karl was called to the bar in June of 2012. Karl worked as a federal prosecutor in Brampton from June 2012 to June 2014. During this time, Karl received intensive criminal law training from senior federal prosecutors from across Canada through the Federal Prosecutor Development Program.
As a federal prosecutor, Karl gained extensive criminal trial experience and appeared frequently in both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice. In addition to prosecuting Criminal Code offences, Karl prosecuted offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Income Tax Act, the Customs Act, and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. When not in court, Karl conducted hundreds of resolution meetings with defence counsel and regularly advised police officers regarding police investigation techniques.
