Since joining Kruse Law, and with the intensive mentorship of Senior Counsel Michael Kruse, Karl has developed into a seasoned and experienced criminal trial lawyer. He has earned a strong reputation as an effective and persuasive courtroom litigator in both his oral and written advocacy. Karl has successfully defended hundreds of clients charged with a variety of offences under the Criminal Code, and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Karl appears regularly in both minor and complex cases in criminal courts throughout southwestern Ontario. He has also appeared as a guest speaker at the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law and the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Prior to 2014, Karl was a federal prosecutor. As a federal prosecutor, the vast majority of Karl’s work was in the Brampton courthouse - Canada’s busiest and most intense criminal court. In addition to prosecuting a wide variety of criminal offences, Karl regularly advised police officers. Karl’s experience as a federal prosecutor has given him invaluable insight into the inner workings of the criminal trial process. It also provides him with a distinct advantage when negotiating with Crown prosecutors.

Karl is a graduate of the University of Toronto Law School. U. of T. Law is consistently ranked as Canada’s number one law school and is widely regarded as among the top law schools in the world. While in law school, Karl spent time working at the law office of Alan Gold; one of Canada’s leading criminal lawyers. Karl also volunteered at the Association in Defence of the Wrongfully Convicted where he worked with several prominent Toronto criminal defence lawyers including James Lockyer and David Bayliss.

After graduating from law school, Karl articled at the federal Department of Justice in Toronto. During his articles, Karl assisted with cases that were before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Ontario Court of Appeal.

The majority of Karl’s clients have never had any dealings with the criminal justice system. More often than not, they come to Karl feeling highly stressed, overwhelmed, and lost. Karl understands that every case is different. He makes a point of listening to his clients attentively and carefully in order to fully understand their particular situation. He enjoys the challenge of communicating complex legal intricacies to his clients clearly, accurately, and in a straight-forward manner. Karl is passionate about providing all of his clients with first-rate legal representation at all stages of the court process.
